As a result of graduating from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963) however, after observing the liberal arts experience in my teaching career (Brown University 1971-75) I'm a believer in education that integrates studying the arts along with studies in many other subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist, who earned obtained an MA from 1967 and earned a Ph.D. earned from UCLA. The program I am in, ethnomusicology, that I began from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within a music department in a College of Letters and Science. The ability to pursue multiple passions is one that I appreciate. I very much enjoy teaching, both students in the undergraduate level (majors as well as non-majors which is why I've written three textbooks-Music in India: the Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) and graduate students. I have periods where I'm the sole professor, and also other times in where I am involved in administrative tasks (such as the Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988, the Dean for Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998 and Chair of Deans at the College of Letters and Science in 1994-98).
